The Council at work

The Human Capital Council consists of Seara and the heads of HR of the sub-holding companies: Skip Franzsen from Bytes, Johan Klein from Altech, Ian Millar from Aberdare Cables representing Powertech, and Andrew Johnston, the Altron group company secretary. The Council can co-opt subject experts into sub-committees as and when it is needed. Seara is adamant that the Council is not there to dictate to the sub-holding companies but rather to assist with the process through clearly defined integrated strategies.

These strategies cover:

  • Succession planning
  • Performance management
  • Leadership pipeline development
  • Talent management
  • Diversity (transformation)
  • Certain aspects of remuneration

The Council will also recommend policies, processes and documents in the interest of consistency, and will make a point of sharing best practices. “We want to strengthen our HR fraternity by establishing a support community for them to tap into.”

Bytes...

  • has implemented a succession planning and performance management system to identify and develop high performing EE candidates throughout the group with the assistance of Bytes People Solutions.
  • had 188 learners in 2009 of which 59 were black and many have been employed full-time.
  • partnered with the Information Technology Association (ITA) to help increase the pool of black women in the industry.

Skills development at Bytes

  • Bytes has spent 2.1% of its payroll on skills development for black, black female, and black disabled employees, and on    learnerships.
  • Bytes People Solutions’ learnership programme trains predominantly black learners from all operations within the Altron    group.
  • In 2009 Bytes developed and trained 188 black people in its operations through learnerships, of which 59 were learners with    disabilities

Bytes sharpen skills development tools

Managed correctly, learnerships are powerful skills development tools. Bytes People Solutions is a key provider of competent learners for Altron. Dr Madelise Grobler, MD of Bytes People Solutions, ascribes this success to the way in which they partner with their clients. “We help our clients to create and implement skills programmes and learnerships that meet their business and industry demands.”

Many learners who have completed their Bytes People Solutions learnerships have since been employed as general administrators, contact centre agents, computer technicians, helpdesk agents, junior network administrators, testers, junior developers, junior web administrators and junior database administrators.

Bytes People Solutions has long been managing IT learnerships for the Altron group. In 2008, however, it decided to test the contact centre learnerships market.  From a large number of highly enthusiastic young people who attended the assessment and interviews sessions, 50 learners, including six disabled people, started the training. In late October 2008, Altech Autopage Cellular provided the first group of 20 learners with workplace experience. They were exposed to a number of different areas and gained tremendous insight into the world of work. Although it was the first time that Altech Autopage Cellular participated as a workplace provider, it exceeded all expectations in mentoring and coaching the learners. In February 2009, the second group of 20 Contact Centre Support learners started their workplace experience.
